Hi all i posted a while back when i was about to buy my first defender. You can t remove the ball joint from it s housing without a bfo press but you can buy a complete unit like this but it adds a lot to the price. You ll then be able to support the housing and press out the ball joint and press in the new one making sure you line the bolt holes up cos the ball joint is splined and once it s in that s it you can t tweek it then. I went ahead and bought it it s a 1996 300tdi defender 90 and have tinkered with it almost every day since.

If you wanna remove the ball joint remove the 2 bolts and carefully cut the flanges off the ball joint where the bolts go through. If you have a big enough ball joint separator i m sure its easy to separate. Bolts connecting ball joint housing to arms came off easy enough with a bit of hammer time. There are some excellent online walk through guides out there however some specify jacking at the chassis rails then raising the axle some specify jacking.
